Zanzibar Island, located on the opposite coast of Tanzania in East Africa, consists of a total of 54 islands. The two largest islands of the archipelago, where the tropical climate prevails, are Unguja Island, where Stone Town is located, and Penba Island, where the clove spice trade is carried out.
Stone Town, the island's capital city, where Indians, Arabs and Swahili people live together and houses are built using coral reefs, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 and taken under protection.
Stone Town, Zanzibar is renowned for its beauty and the fine organization of its buildings. Stone Town is the main city of Zanzibar and a city of significant historical and artistic importance in East Africa. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse influences underlying Swahili culture, with a unique blend of Moorish, Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements.
In the narrow streets of Stone Town, you can find barbers, hardware stores, grocers, slipper shops, repair shops, in short, you can find anything you are looking for. Tailors with pedal-operated sewing machines trying to keep up with orders, women selling tropical fruit clusters in wide wicker baskets and a dense crowd of men and women in the city's labyrinthine streets...
There are 51 mosques, 6 Hindu temples, and 2 churches in Stone Town. Young girls carry baskets and bundles on their heads, and men in their robes, fezzes, and skullcaps take you back 100 years in time.
Forodhani Garden, which was renovated in 2009 with a cost of approximately 3 million dollars, is a small park by the sea. This place is a meeting point for people especially at night. At night, this place turns into a fairground where local food is sold. Octopus on skewers, shrimp and crab, also wonderful calamari, sugar cane presses sold by sugar cane, fried bananas, etc. We tasted everything except soft drinks, it was great.
Also, Secret Garden Restaurant is a great place for dinner. This secret garden located in Emerson Spice hotel is very enjoyable and romantic. The food is delicious and the music and atmosphere are wonderful. You can experience great food accompanied by jazz music.
Livingstone Beach Restaurant was our favourite for sunset. We were there every night. Right on the beach, your feet are in the sand, the cocktails are great. The view is so peaceful. There is also live music in the evenings.
The Swahili House Restaurant is a great place to relax, drink beer, and eat. The staff are also very nice.
We stayed at the Africa House hotel. A beautiful hotel in the heart of Stone Town.
