Sigiriya or Sinhagiri is an ancient rock fortress located in the Northern Matale District near the city of Dambulla in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Its name refers to a site of historical and archaeological importance dominated by a large rock pillar approximately 200 metres high.

Lion Rock is one of the most remarkable places to visit in Sigiriya. This rock is surrounded by forests and is 200 meters high. A monastery complex was built on Sigiriya Lion Rock by Buddhist monks and they lived here until King Kasyapa decided to build a palace here. The palace was built in 7 years between 477 and 485 BC. It is quite a difficult climb as there are 1200 steps to reach the top of Sigiriya Lion Rock. It takes about 45 minutes to climb these steps.

We chose to climb Pidurangala Rock opposite. We set off at 4:00 AM and caught the sunrise at the top. The climb took about 30 minutes. Pidurangala Rock was formed as a result of volcanic activity. It is approximately 200 meters high and located north of Sigiriya Lion Rock. The name Pidurangala means “heaps of gold offered”. Buddhist monks settled on Pidurangala Rock more than 2500 years ago. These monks previously lived in a monastery at Sigiriya Lion Rock.

Sri Lankan national parks are home to a wide variety of animals such as elephants, leopards, bears, jackals, crocodiles, deers, wild buffalo and many other wild animals. These parks also host a wide variety of bird fauna, vertebrates and crocodiles as well as a wide variety of insects. We visited the Kuadulla National Park. We came across many elephants and a wide variety of birds in the area where we went by jeeps.

Accommodation recommendation:

Wijesiri Family Guest House was a great choice to stay in Sigiriya. We had a great time eating at the restaurant of the mother of the house, drinking cocktails at the bar of the son of the house, and having wonderful conversations with the father of the house. The family members are Hindu, Buddhist and Christian. They are quite colorful. We are sure that they will offer you a clean and warm house 🥰
