The Phnom Kulen region is considered the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. For this reason, it has great importance in Cambodian history. King Jayavarma II declared independence from the Srivijaya Empire, which is based in Indonesia today, in 802 and made Phnom Kulen the first capital of the Khmer Empire, believing that the sacred gods lived here. The region also contributed greatly to the construction of the Angkor Wat Temple, which was later declared the capital. The Samre Tribe living here would grind the abundant sandstone here and carry it to the royal quarters. On the other hand, this region was also the most important center and last headquarters of the terrorist organization known as the Khmer Rouge. It is said that some of the forest is still mined.
There are many temples around, but the most visited temples here are the 1000 Lingas Temple, a Hindu temple, and the Phnom Koulen Pagoda, a Buddhist temple. We also visited the Buddhist temple, Phnom Koulen Pagoda. We lined up like everyone else and saw the 190-meter-high Reclining Buddha Statue. People visit the temple with flowers and money in their hands. They give their gifts to Buddha.
How beautiful the world is with different civilizations and beliefs.
