Chefchaouen's streets, walls, and stairways are painted blue from top to bottom. Why blue? There are several different stories behind this. Some say the color stems from Jewish mystical beliefs and reminds one of the sky, and therefore of God. Others say it keeps mosquitoes away. Whatever the reason, the result is stunning! Strolling through Chefchaouen feels like you've entered a painting.
Streets Where You'll Lose Yourself
Chefchaouen's Medina, the old town center, is comprised of narrow stone streets. You don't need a map, because this is a place to get lost and explore! Bougainvillea lingers between the blue walls, tiny cafes and shops selling handmade goods await you on every corner... The Medina's atmosphere is so peaceful, it feels like you've stepped into a fairytale.
Heart of the City: Plaza Uta el-Hammam
If you tire yourself out while exploring, you can head to Plaza Uta el-Hammam. This is the city's center and meeting point. Sitting in a café, sipping traditional mint tea, and gazing out over the city is a wonderful experience. The Kasbah, or old fortress, rising right in the center of the square, is intriguing with its history. You can visit the small museum inside, then climb the tower to gaze down upon Chefchaouen.
Alone with Nature: Ras El Maa and the Rif Mountains
Chefchaouen is captivating not only with its urban beauty but also with its natural beauty. A short distance from the medina brings you to the Ras El Maa Waterfall. With its cool waters, locals sitting around, and women washing their clothes, it offers a truly local experience. If you enjoy hiking, there are wonderful trekking routes in the Rif Mountains. Talassemtane National Park, in particular, offers an unforgettable experience with its natural beauty and stunning scenery.
What to Eat in Chefchaouen?
Moroccan cuisine is a discovery in itself, and Chefchaouen makes this discovery even more special.
Tajin: This traditional dish, prepared with slow-cooked meat and vegetables, is a must-try.
Couscous: This dish, made especially on Fridays, leaves a mark on your palate with its deliciousness.
Mint Tea: As in every corner of Morocco, mint tea is an integral part of the culture here.
