Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is a city known for its historical and cultural richness. It attracts attention with its colorful canals, historical buildings, museums and lively streets. Amsterdam is a city that offers various activities for art lovers, history enthusiasts and nightlife lovers. It offers many opportunities, famous for its bicycle culture and full of local flavors.
Dam Square is the heart of the city. The Royal Palace has been here since 1655. The building was originally designed by Jacob van Campen as the City Hall. It was remodeled by Napoleon's brother Louis Bonaparte. It has been used as a palace since then. The square hosts the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) and the National Monument built in memory of World War II, which stands out with its whiteness.
The Van Gogh Museum was opened in 1973. The building is quite modern. The main building was designed by Gerrit Rietveld and the large circular wing by Kisho Kurokawa. The museum displays Van Gogh's works and 800 letters to his brother Theo. The works also show sections from Van Gogh's manic depressive life. The museum displays Van Gogh's famous works such as The Potato Eaters, Vase with Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles, and Crows in a Wheat Field.
In the Rijk Museum, thousands of rare works can be seen in the labyrinthine rooms. In addition to the works of 15th and 17th century Flemish artists, other legendary artists are also hosted with their works in many of the halls of the museum. The museum is too big to be visited in one day. It has the largest Dutch art collection in the world. There is a wide collection here, from the first religious works to the most important works of the Golden Age.
Rembrandt van Rijn is one of the most important Dutch painters of the 17th century. He is my favorite painter. He is known as the "painter of the human soul", as he puts it. He is known for his detailed portraits and religious paintings. Rembrandt is also famous for his use of light and shadow, which gives depth and realism to his work. The artist's most famous work, "Night Watch", is exhibited in the Rijksmuseum. I had the opportunity to examine all the paintings here. They are really worth seeing.
At the Madame Tussaud Museum in Amsterdam, it is possible to see wax statues of many people, from the royal family to famous artists, actors and athletes. Lady Gaga, Einstein, Princess Maxima, Queen Beatrix, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Rafael van der Vaart and James Bond are just a few of the famous names that have wax statues in the museum.
Central Station is the main railway station of Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. It is the country's largest station, the second busiest after Utrecht Central Station, and the most visited national heritage site in the Netherlands.
Amsterdam is a city famous for its canals and they give the city a special beauty. The length of the canals in Amsterdam alone is 75 km and there are a total of 165 canals and 1500 bridges. The canals of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. As in many parts of the Netherlands, the canals in Amsterdam were first dug in the swampy area to control the waters. They were also used for defense and transportation. There are houseboats on some canals. These are usually old boats or boats that were designed as houses from the beginning. Houseboats, which first emerged as a result of the housing shortage in the 60s and 70s, are now not only a necessity but also a lifestyle. Taking a boat tour can be preferred because it offers the opportunity to see and evaluate Amsterdam from different perspectives. I really enjoyed it.
